INTERNATIONAL

arrowThe aim of this area of opportunity is 'To provide opportunities to develop global awareness.'

When you join JCI UK you automatically become a member of the worldwide organisation - Junior Chamber International. We operate through over 5,000 chambers in 120 different countries. This truly opens the door to a myriad of opportunities.

The world according to JCI is split into four different areas: Africa, Asia, Americas and Europe.

Each area comes together for an annual Area Conference. In June 2010 the JCI European Conference will be in Aarhus, Denmark and in 2011 in Tarragona, Spain.

In addition to the Area Conferences there is also a World Congress that takes place in November. In 2010 delegates are going to Osaka, Japan and in 2011, Brussels, Belgium. These international conferences offer high quality training and networking opportunities, keynote speakers, a vibrant international trade show and lots of social opportunities to mix, mingle and meet fellow JCI members from all over the globe.

You do not have to travel that far a field to benefit from the international element as many local chambers have "twinning" arrangements just as local towns and cities do as well. You may be part of a team helping to organise a week-end event for members of your own twin chamber from Europe or further a field. You may choose to go on the return twinning visit where you are likely to be accommodated in someone's home and introduced to their own town, city and culture.

The international element of JCI allows you to be part of a truly global community and helps foster greater understanding among people of all races, creeds, cultures and backgrounds. The very real opportunity to network with people across the globe at international conferences is seen as an invaluable tool in the increasingly inter-dependant global society we now live in.

Twinning

Twinning represents one of the best ways for members to network with Jaycees across the world. Generally LOMs (Local Organisations Of Members - known as Chambers) will visit overseas LOMs and be given home hospitality as well as a unique insight into the lives and localities of fellow Jaycees. They are highly affordable and usually include social, training and business aspects in their programmes. They also act as catalysts for making new friends and for working together on projects.

There are three types of twinning agreement:

  • Traditional Twinning. This is usually between two Chambers within reasonable travelling distance. Ideally at least one joint meeting of the twinning partners should be held each year. The cost of the visit can be kept to a reasonable level by arranging home hospitality,
  • Multi Twinning. This is a twinning agreement made by several Chambers in different countries. Ideally there is a multi-twinning weekend held each year hosted by each Chamber in turn. There is no limit to the number of Chambers involved provided that all the partners agree on how to organise the twinning.
  • Virtual Twinning. This is usually between Chambers in distant countries, where exchange visits will be difficult or too expensive. There will be a regular exchange of information via letters, local newspapers, photographs, Internet chat rooms, etc.

In order that this information can be kept up to date please let the International Director know if you set up, or sever, any links; are hosting or attending any twinning events; or wish to get involved in twinning for the first time. In addition, if chambers wish to provide a summary of their international events for inclusion on the website, please mail these to Lesley Young
