PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

arrowThe aim of this area of opportunity is "to provide learning opportunities for personal development."

Personal Development

At a local level the chamber should run a regular series of personal development sessions that might include inviting external speakers in to talk about a range of relevant topics such as leadership skills, neuro-linguistic programming, mind-mapping, business planning or other skills that members have expressed an opinion in developing.

Competitions

The chamber may choose to participate in some of the national competitions that are run which include:

  • 2-person debating. Two teams of three people (two speakers and a coach) are given a topic to debate. They then have 15 minutes to prepare an argument for and against before beginning the debate, with each speaker debating for approximately three minutes. A sure test of your ability to think on your feet!

  • Extempore: an off the cuff speaking competition where those taking part have to speak in styles or on subjects presented to them on the evening.

  • Public Speaking. This takes several formats - some run an "off-the-cuff" competition where you put your hand into a bag, withdraw an object, have 60 seconds preparation time and then have to speak about the object for 2 minutes. Others participate in the JCI UK National Public Speaking Competition where members at a local level win through to the regional and national competitions, each speaking for 7 minutes on one of a given set of topics.

Training for Trainers

For those members who are interested in developing their own training skills, JCI UK offers many opportunities. We operate three international training courses called Presenter, Trainer and Designer.

JCI PRESENTER is the basic speaking and presenting course. Participants will learn how to speak correctly, face and involve an audience, and have opportunities to practice as presenters in this two-day course.

JCI TRAINER is an advanced two-day course on delivering training. It will include knowledge of training methods, learning styles, and training resources.

JCI Designer will prepare individuals who already have proven talent in training presentation, for a new dimension of training development.

JCI Designer uses the most advanced concepts, methods, and technology designed to create the environment to allow students to develop a new training course.

Personal Experience

Many of the opportunities for personal development will come through your involvement in the wide range of activities that are available in some of the other areas of opportunity - International, Community and Business. Nothing beats the experiences that you will learn from practical and hands-on involvement in specific projects.
